Daft Punk – Memory Tapes – Episode 7 – Nile Rodgers ( Lyrics )
I’m n
Rogers I’m a guitar player producer
songwriter
and just a guy a guy who loves doing
music you know when I’m working on a
record it’s never about me and I’m
always trying for the artist I’m going
to make your
hip when I figure it out I don’t have it
right now but I’m going to come up with
it lose to
dance can you tell me a little bit about
how you initially got involved with da
Punk
they had a a song called
[Applause]
defunk I got a call from someone I’m not
really sure because this is way way back
in the
day but they said the dudes who did the
funk are putting an album out and
they’re doing a listening party and I
knew the owner of the club so I said
okay cool I’ll go to the listening party
and when I got there uh it was my first
time meeting the guys they said that
they were quietly dedicating this album
to my partner Bernard Edwards who had
just died recently and when I got to
that album I never saw the inner sleeve
or anything like that until about a year
or two ago and I open it up and there’s
a Chic album on the floor and I was like
oh okay now I get it anyway I don’t
remember us talking any anymore that
night but later on after that record was
out I came to
France and they reached out to me but in
France they were having some kind of
strike and I couldn’t get from where I
was to where they were and I thought
okay well it wasn’t meant to
be fast forward I don’t know or
years later they in New York
they came to my house we had a really
good time we had a meeting where they
told me about the concept with random
access memories they said something to
me that blew me
away um they said that they wanted to do
an album as if the internet never
existed I thought oh old school go in
and play like the way we we used to do
it which is what I love doing I get to
the
studio and there was nobody there except
for tomama and giman I said to Toma man
you’re standing exactly where Bernard
Edwards was when we recorded our first
hit they were so surprised to find that
we cut our first record Electric Lady to
he also insisted that I bring my
plexiglass guitar the seethrough guitar
it’s the only other guitar that actually
sounds like my hit
maker
wow that’s really nice I might go back
to using this live I need roll to carry
that thing wow I might use his
life it was a good thing that he said
that especially on get lucky where his
three guitar parts
playing check it
out
[Applause]
[Laughter]
W that’s really cool the
distinctive linear lick was coming from
the plexiglass guitar which became the
get up the light to get lucky right so
had I not play that lick I don’t know
what the song would have been called and
I don’t know what farel would have
say when they released the album and my
band and we were on tour we didn’t
realize how big get lucky was becoming
and how fast that was getting big I
always have this rule that I never will
play an artist song that I worked on
until after they play it first so I
wanted da Punk to perform it first
because when I add it to my show I’m
going to sheify it I’m going to add it
my way and do whatever we’re going to do
so we play glassenberry we finished our
set and everybody starts saying
n n I’m like well people don’t usually
do that at my
show my front of house guy just started
playing get lucky you know just the
record cuz we didn’t have it in the set
yet so the crowd started
singing
we
are tears just started streaming down my
face you could see it and I’m just
crying like a baby I’m like thinking to
myself wow they’re treating me in a way
that I don’t see myself I don’t I don’t
see myself with
some you know rock star I am a person I
write music I perform music to make
people feel good that’s the main reason
why I go out on that stage but now they
had turned it around on me and they were
making me feel good and making me feel
good in a way that I had never
[Applause]
experienced thank you thank
you certainly the most rewarding to have
been involved with a project that was so
Monumental to my life like I’m sitting
next to forel that the the gramys he
just assumed that I had won tons of
Grammys he says you mean to tell me you
didn’t win a Grammy for Let’s Dance I
said let’s dance came out the same year
as
Thriller no we didn’t we didn’t be
thriller so winning my first Grammy was
amazing to me it’s become a great
learning experience for me after death
punk I started playing with much younger
artists no one is my age I’m oh
Charlie XCX burn a boy I just recorded
my first K-pop record and now I’ve got
like five under my belt and they’re like
huge life was one way before random
access memories and completely different
after she’s up on to the sun I’m up all
night to get some she’s up all night for
good fun I’m up all night to get lucky
we’re up all night to the sun we’re up
all night to get some we’re up all night
for good fun we’re up all night to get
lucky do you have any extras I know that
such great storytelling good yeah thank
you n you
